The PIP Expanded Guide to the Nikon F5 (New Revised Edition) (PIP Expanded Guide Series) Chris Weston
"Photography for the people" is how the ads read for the NikonF5-the perfect blend of toughness, simple use, and the latest technology. Problem is, F5 has far more features than most owners know what to do with. Chris Weston's years of F5 mastery demystifies the camera's features, translating its technical jargon into terms most photographers already know. Detailed descriptions of functions and features are accompanied by a chart that describes and defines each part. The basic functions of focusing and exposure, including autoexposure, get a complete, photo-filled chapter. So do each of the F5's flashes and lenses, as well as all available accessories. Best of all: you-are-there depictions of outdoor weather challenges and indoor shooting sessions with unpredictable people....

Between Heaven and Texas Naomi Shihab Nye
Between heaven and Texas, there's a sky that goes on forever. On cloudless mornings after a norther has blown through, the sky is such a perfect cobalt blue that you forget the "between" and know that heaven is Texas, or Texas is heaven?it doesn't really matter which. But most days there are clouds between Texas and heaven?puffy white clouds that set us dreaming on lazy summer days or roiling storm clouds that unleash lightning, tornadoes, and hail. The sky between heaven and Texas is a stage for drama more often than not, just like the lives we live below it. Perhaps that's why we're always looking up. In this beautiful book, noted photographer Wyman Meinzer revisits the place that inspires his most creative work?the Texas sky. His photographs capture the vast dramas that occur between heaven and Texas?rainstorms that blot out mountain ranges, lightning strikes that dazzle a night-black prairie, trains of clouds that rumble for miles over wheat fields,......

The Ongoing Moment Geoff Dyer
In his most recent book, Yoga for People Who Can’t Be Bothered to Do It, Geoff Dyer confessed that not only did he not take pictures in the course of his travels but that he does not even own a camera. With characteristic perver-sity—and trademark originality—Dyer has now come up with an idiosyncratic history of . . . photography. Seeking to identify their signature styles, Dyer looks at the ways in which such canonical figures as Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, AndrA© KertA©sz, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, and William Eggleston, among others, have photographed the same things (barber shops, benches, hands, roads, and signs, for example). In doing so, he constructs a narrative in which these photographers—many of whom never met—constantly encounter one another. Great photographs change the way we see the world; The Ongoing Moment changes the way we look at both. It is the most ambitious example to date of a form of......

Three Gorges
In the heart of central China lie the Three Gorges, a series of majestic canyons through which flows the Yangtze River. In 2003 the Three Gorges Dam began flooding this area creating a reservoir the length of Lake Superior, covering hundreds of square miles of land and displacing 2 million people. Controversial in almost every aspect from its conception to its construction to the corruption associated with the resettlement program, the dam is the largest in the world and perhaps the most destructive and most dangerous. From 2001 to 2003 photographer Bill Zorn made multiple visits to the area now flooded, carrying large format camera gear and staying in tiny villages and farmer's homes. His black and white images capture in exquisite detail the soul of a people wrenched into the 21st century and a landscape lost forever. The 65 beautifully reproduced duotone images are complemented by an introduction by Dai Qing, a Chinese journalist with the courage to go to prison for her......

Empires in the Forest: Jamestown And the Beginning of America Avery Chenoweth, Robert Llewellyn
From the author and photographer who brought us "a new genre of art book" in Albemarle: A Story of Landscape and American Identity comes a new collaborative effort detailing the story of our nation's birth: Jamestown and the Making of America. This beautiful work of photography and prose traces the ways in which American culture grew out of the conflict that characterized the first contact between Native Americans and Europeans. Expanding in their unique treatment of Albemarle County, the artists use photographs from our time to suggest both the ancient and recent pasts, creating a virtual experience from the Colonial era into modern times. Telling this great story in modern terms by dusting off the history to reveal the main players as fresh and alive today as they were then, Jamestown and the Making of America beautifully depicts a landscape synonymous with American history, from its tumultuous beginning through today....
