Manchester's Northern Quarter (Informed Conservation) Ian Goodall, Andrew Martindale, Simon Taylor
This book raises awareness of the wide range and the varied character of the historic buildings which make up the Northern Quarter's townscape, and the forces and trends which contributed to its appearance. It also shows how the area has evolved over the last two and a half centuries, forming the historic backdrop to everyday life in a particularly vibrant and culturally distinctive quarter of the city. The book will have a broad appeal, both to the established urban community and to those with an interest in the city of Manchester and its buildings....

New Firm Creation in the United States: Initial Explorations with the PSED II Data Set (International Studies in Entrepreneurship)
The study of firm creation is becoming a focal point of business research, education, practice, and policymaking. Currently, it is estimated that 12 million people in the United States are involved in business start-ups; the phenomenon is embedded in the American culture—and in many others around the world. The Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) research program is designed to enhance the scientific understanding of how people start businesses, by gathering and providing primary data on nascent entrepreneurship. The first phase of data collection was undertaken between 1998 and 2000; the second phase, PSED II, with support from the Kauffman Foundation and the U.S. Small Business Administration, was completed in 2006, involving 2,300 variables on a sample of over 1,200 entrepreneurs. The program is now being expanded to other countries. This volume includes contributions from the organizers and advisory board members of the PSED II project, highlighting the key......

Trapped Charged Particles and Fundamental Interactions (Lecture Notes in Physics)
The development of ion traps has spurred significant experimental activities able to link measurable quantities to the most fundamental aspects of physics. The first chapter sets the scene and motivates the use of ion traps with an in-depth survey of the low-energy electroweak sector of the standard model amenable to precision test. The next parts then introduce and review aspects of the theory, simulation and experimental implementation of such traps. Last but not least, two important applications, namely high resolution mass spectrometry in Penning traps and tests of fundamental physics - such as the CPT theorem - with trapped antiprotons are discussed. This volume bridges the gap between the graduate textbook and the research literature and will assist graduate students and newcomers to the field in quickly entering and mastering the subject matter....

A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud Brian May
The Zodiacal Light, that misty diffuse cone of light seen in the West after Sunset and the East before Sunrise, is a beautiful and intriguing phenomenon. Even though everyone can enjoy the sight from a suitably dark location, it is poorly understood, and has been the subject of relatively little research. Brian May began his research into the subject in 1970, and was finally awarded his PhD in 2007, after a hiatus of more than 30 years pursuing his other career as guitarist with his rock band Queen. This book is Brian’s thesis, and as such presents the results of his research for astronomers. This thesis documents the building of a pressure-scanned Fabry-Perot Spectrometer, equipped with a photomultiplier and pulse-counting electronics, and its deployment at the Observatorio del Teide at Izana in Tenerife, at an altitude of 7,700 feet (2,567 m), to record high-resolution spectra of the Zodiacal Light. The aim was to achieve the first systematic mapping of the Magnesium I (MgI)......

Soft Matter: Volume 4: Lipid Bilayers and Red Blood Cells
The fourth volume in this series focuses on biological membrane science, in particular its biophysics. Clearly divided into two parts, the first covers red blood cell shapes, while the second part on molecular simulation provides in-depth information on how to make significant progress with membrane characterization by means of models, and how to refine them by comparing them to experiments. The result is a highly relevant monograph for both an understanding of the biophysical concepts as well as of novel applications....

The Development of Modern Medicine in Non-Western Countries: Historical Perspectives (Royal Asiatic Society Books) Hormoz Ebrahimn
The history of medicine in non-European countries has often been characterized by the study of their native “traditional” medicine, such as (Galenico-)Islamic medicine, and Ayurvedic or Chinese medicine. Modern medicine in these countries, on the other had, has usually been viewed as a Western corpus of knowledge and institution, juxtaposing or replacing the native medicine but without any organic relation with the local context. This essentialist perspective, believing in fixed Western and non-Western sysems, has led many historians to neglect the assimilative properties of these systems and the evolution that can occur in them. As a result, we witness a chronological as well as conceptual discontinuity in the historiographical narrative for non-European ountries: Traditional local system on the one hand, and modern medicine on the other. Nevertheless, not only traditional medical systems have changed at various levels due to local dynamics, even though sometimes spurred by outside ......

Fitting a Background Map to Spatial Data: Application in R Alexander Kowarik
The goal of this work is to provide and explain a wayfrom a printed map to a fitted background map of a spatial dataset. Thevariables in this dataset can be from any field of interest, but there have to be twodimensional coordinates for each observation. One of several implemented transformation types hasto be chosen now. Furthermore we have to identify reference points on the map andselect reference points from the data. which later should have approximately the samecoordinates and are used for estimating the transformation parameters. The process of fittingthe background map is supposed to be iterative, sothat in each step new reference points could be added or wrongreference points could be deleted. The presented source code is available in the Rpackage DASplusR....
