Probabilistic Logic Networks: A Comprehensive Framework for Uncertain Inference Ben Goertzel, Matthew Ikle, Izabela Freire Goertzel, Ari Heljakka
This book describes Probabilistic Logic Networks (PLN), a novel conceptual, mathematical and computational approach to uncertain inference. In order to carry out effective reasoning in real-world circumstances, AI software must robustly handle uncertainty. However, previous approaches to uncertain inference do not have the breadth of scope required to provide an integrated treatment of the disparate forms of cognitively critical uncertainty as they manifest themselves within the various forms of pragmatic inference. Going beyond prior probabilistic approaches to uncertain inference, PLN is able to encompass within uncertain logic such ideas as induction, abduction, analogy, fuzziness and speculation, and reasoning about time and causality. The book reviews the conceptual and mathematical foundations of PLN, giving the specific algebra involved in each type of inference encompassed within PLN. Inference control and the integration of inference with other cognitive faculties are also......

Basic Medical Endocrinology, Fourth Edition H. Maurice Goodman
Basic Medical Endocrinology, Fourth Edition provides up-to-date coverage of rapidly unfolding advances in the understanding of hormones involved in regulating most aspects of bodily functions. The discussion focuses on molecular and cellular aspects of hormone production and action firmly rooted in the context of integrative physiology. Topics are approached from the perspective of a physiologist with over 40 years of teaching experience. This fourth edition is richly illustrated in full color with both descriptive schematic diagrams and laboratory findings obtained in clinical studies. Each of the fourteen chapters starts with an 'Overview' of the topic and ends with a 'Suggested Reading' list. Initial chapters lay a foundation by presenting basic information and principles of hormone structure, secretion, and actions, and the physiological roles of the principal endocrine glands. Subsequent chapters address the role of the endocrine system in solving such physiological problems as......

Random Effect and Latent Variable Model Selection (Lecture Notes in Statistics)
Random effects and latent variable models are broadly used in analyses of multivariate data. These models can accommodate high dimensional data having a variety of measurement scales. Methods for model selection and comparison are needed in conducting hypothesis tests and in building sparse predictive models. However, classical methods for model comparison are not well justified in such settings. This book presents state of the art methods for accommodating model uncertainty in random effects and latent variable models. It will appeal to students, applied data analysts, and experienced researchers. The chapters are based on the contributors’ research, with mathematical details minimized using applications-motivated descriptions. The first part of the book focuses on frequentist likelihood ratio and score tests for zero variance components. Contributors include Xihong Lin, Daowen Zhang and Ciprian Crainiceanu. The second part focuses on Bayesian methods for random effects......

Vibrations and Acoustic Radiation of Thin Structures Paul J. Filippi
Sound is produced by vibrations and as such can be dampened or augmented based on materials selection. This title looks at the effects of sound and vibration on thin structures and details how damage may be avoided, acoustical effects created, and sound levels controlled....

Finite Gro Theory (Graduate Studies in Mathematics) I. Martin Isaacs
The text begins with a review of group actions and Sylow theory. It includes semidirect products, the Schur-Zassenhaus theorem, the theory of commutators, coprime actions on groups, transfer theory, Frobenius groups, primitive and multiply transitive permutation groups, the simplicity of the PSL groups, the generalized Fitting subgroup and also Thompson's J-subgroup and his normal $p$-complement theorem. Topics that seldom (or never) appear in books are also covered. These include subnormality theory, a group-theoretic proof of Burnside's theorem about groups with order divisible by just two primes, the Wielandt automorphism tower theorem, Yoshida's transfer theorem, the ``principal ideal theorem'' of transfer theory and many smaller results that are not very well known. Proofs often contain original ideas, and they are given in complete detail. In many cases they are simpler than can be found elsewhere. The book is largely based on the author's lectures, and consequently, the style......

Nuclear Cardiac Imaging: Principles and Applications Ami E. Iskandrian, Ernest V. Gardia
Nuclear cardiac imaging referst o cardiac radiological diagnostic techniques performed with the aid of radiopharmaceuticals, which are perfused into the myocardium as markers. These imaging studies provide a wide range of information about the heart, including the contractility of the heart, the amount of blood supply to the heart and whether parts of the heart muscle are alive or dead. This is essential information for cardiologists, and nuclear imaging has become an increasingly important part of the cardiologist's armamentarium. Iskandrian's text has become a leading book in the field and the fourth edition will continue the tradition. The text will be updated throughout to reflect the many advances in the field, and, as a new feature, each chapter will conclude with a QandA session on important and difficult clinical issues....

How to Make a Puppy Sy A. Guth
Dog breeding is a wonderful and fulfilling activity. The aim of this book is to aid the novice dog breeder in establishing a methodology based on best practices and common sense to ensure the delivery and rearing of healthy puppies. The book covers the basic aspects of dog breeding from designing a kennel to a detailed description on whelping puppies to preparing weaning formulas to choosing a puppy to breed on from; vetting puppy buyers; and case lessons based on the author's own experiences. The book also presents the basics of coefficient of inbreeding; reproduction cycle and mating; record keeping; and equipment helpful in breeding dogs. The book is well illustrated to enable an easy understanding of the concepts. The reader will find this book a caring approach to breeding dogs....

Occupational Therapy and Life Course Development: A work book for Professional Practice in Health and Social Care Ruth Wright, Leoni Sugarman
Occupational Therapy and Life Course Development relates the various aspects of life course theory to occupational therapy practice, emphasizing the life course as an organizing framework. Each section demonstrates a theory, shows how it can be applied to practice, and gives the reader an opportunity to experiment with the theory in the light of their own occupational therapy practice. In each section activities related to OT practice are included, followed by discussion questions, a summary of key points, and case studies....

Comparative Hepatitis (Birkhauser Advances in Infectious Diseases)
Acute and chronic hepatitis and hepatitis-related diseases such as liver failure, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma are among the most important causes for disabilities and death. Hepatocellular injury is due to a variety of agents including viruses, toxins, radiation, injury and drugs but also bacteria, parasites and autoimmune reactions. This volume reviews today’s knowledge about hepatitis with emphasis on comparative aspects between hepatitis in humans and animals, but also between different etiological agents. This particular viewpoint makes the book relevant for scientists from both human and veterinary medicine, gastroenterologists, pathologists, virologists and students of human and veterinary medicine....
