Head and Neck Cancer: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Head and Neck Cancer)
This book employs a two-part approach to treating patients with head and neck cancer: maximize the chance for a cure while maintaining a strong emphasis on quality of life. Although not seen as commonly as other aggressive forms, head and neck cancer is a devastating disease that has tremendous implications on the overall health of the patient, as well as their appearance and quality of life. The goal of the editors was to create the first truly multidisciplinary book in this field that addresses all aspects and treatment options. The book was designed to be a comprehensive textbook crossing all disciplines and representing a wide spectrum of specialists throughout the country, including surgical, radiation, and medical oncologists, as well as dentists, pathologists, radiologists and nurses....

The State of the Nation's Ecosystems 2008: Measuring the Land, Waters, and Living Resources of The United States Economics, and the Environment The H. John Heinz III Center for Science
Revised and updated periodically, The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems is widely recognized as America’s most comprehensive report on the condition of our lands, waters, and living resources. Like the acclaimed first edition, this second edition provides onpartisan, scientifically reliable information for policymakers, scientists, journalists, and anyone who is interested in the state of America’s environment. The State of the Nation’s Ecosystems provides a way to “take the pulse” of America’s environment It is organized around the nation’s primary ecosystems: farmlands, forests, fresh waters, coasts and oceans, grasslands and shrublands, urban and suburban areas, and the nation as a whole. For each, it identifies what should be measured, counted, and reprted so that decision makers and others can understand the changes that are occurring, set priorities for action, and measure whether we are achieving our environmental goals. Conditions are tracked using approximately 100 indicators,......

Patterns of Change: Linguistic Innovations in the Development of Classical Mathematics (Science Networks. Historical Studies) Ladislav Kvasz
The book offers a reconstruction of linguistic innovations in the history of mathematics. It argues that there are at least three ways in which the language of mathematics can be changed. As illustration of changes of the first kind, called re-codings, is the development along the line: synthetic geometry, analytic geometry, fractal geometry, and set theory. In this development the mathematicians changed the very way of constructing geometric figures. As illustration of changes of the second kind, called relativization, is the development of synthetic geometry along the line: Euclid’s geometry, projective geometry, non-Euclidean geometry, Erlanger program up to Hilbert’s Grundlagen der Geometrie. Changes of the third kind, called re-formulations are for instance the changes that can be seen on the different editions of Euclid’s Elements. Perhaps the best known among them is Playfair’s change of the formulation of the fifth postulate....

Salopia: An Archaeological Assessment of Shrewsbury Nigel Baker
Shrewsbury is one of England's most celebrated historic towns. It is renowned for its black and white timber-framed buildings, for the Old Market Hall, the Abbot's House on Butcher Row, and for its picturesque, winding, ancient streets. Its Georgian architecture - whether neoclassical brick or the world's first iron-framed mill - faithfully reflects the vibrancy of the town known to Charles Darwin's grandfather. But the paradox of Shrewsbury is that this extraordinarily rich townscape has until recently seen less archaeological investigation than others, more damaged and compromised, elsewhere. Many fundamental questions about its past have remained unanswered. This book is the first ever written to stand back and pose the question - how far has the archaeological investigation of the town progressed? What is now known? What is most significant? And, above all, what are the mysteries that remain and what direction should archaeological research take in the future? This book is the......

Chemistry of Spices
Spices are high value, export-oriented crops used extensively in food and beverage flavourings, medicines, cosmetics and perfumes. Interest is growing however in the theoretical and practical aspects of the biosynthetic mechanisms of active components in spices as well as the relationship between the biological activity and chemical structure of these secondary metabolites. A wide variety of phenolic substances and amides derived from spices have been found to possess potent chemopreventive, anti-mutagenic, anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. Representing the first discussion of the chemical properties of a wide cross section of important spices, this book covers extensively the three broad categories of plant-derived natural products: the terpenoids, the alkaloids and the phenyl propanoids and allied phenolic compounds. Spice crops such as black pepper, ginger, turmeric and coriander are covered with information on botany, composition, uses, chemistry, international......
