Advances in Bioactivation Research (Biotechnology: Pharmaceutical Aspects)
This volume will provide researchers with recent information on bioactivation reactions of drugs and toxicants and will provide examples of how molecular and genomic biology, proteomics, mass spectrometry, and computational modeling are used in bioactivaton research. In other sections of this volume, focus will be on recent applications of bioactivation research in pharmacology, toxicology, and environmental health sciences. In these sections, the contributors will demonstrate the integration of bioactivaion research in several research areas, including new drug design, drug development, mechanisms of cell death, toxicity and carcinogenicity, metabolite-specific biomarkers of exposure and effect, and extrapolations of results from animal models to humans....

Autism: Current Theories and Evidence (Current Clinical Neurology)
Creative thinking and collaborative scientific research have advanced our understanding of autism, and we are now beginning to synthesize the data into evidence and theories. Autism: Current Theories and Evidence presents current theories about autism and the evidence that supports them. The goal is to show how the scientific method is revealing the biological bases of this spectrum of disorders, thereby leading the way to their treatment and prevention using evidence-based medicine. This book has 20 chapters divided into 6 sections: Molecular and Clinical Genetics; Neurotransmitters and Cell Signaling; Endocrinology, Growth and Metabolism; Immunology, Maternal-Fetal Effects and Neuroinflammation; Neuroanatomy, Imaging and Neural networks; and Environmental Mechanisms and Models. The subjects cover a wide range of current scientific work in the field of autism, with strong and growing evidence to support them, and demonstrate both the breadth and depth of current autism research. The......

Londinium and Beyond: Essays on Roman London and its Hinterland for Harvey Sheldon (CBA Research Report)
This exciting volume pays tribute to the work of the archaeologist Harvey Sheldon, who has been involved in the archaeology of London for over four decades. The papers, written by his friends and colleagues in the archaeological community, cover a wide range of subjects connected with the archaeology of Roman London. These are presented under four main themes and are prefaced by a short introduction explaining how they relate to the research framework document for London published in 2002. The volume begins with a section on the chronology and cartography of Roman London, including papers on antiquarian sources, estimates of population, and the city after the departure of the Romans. The second section examines the landscape and environment of Roman London and its hinterland, drawing from a variety of disciplines: subjects covered include the evidence for Roman gardens; the route of the road from London to Colchester; and a gazetteer of tree-ring dates for Roman London. The third part......

Krems-Hundssteig-Mammutjaeger der Eiszeit: Ein Nutzungsareal palaolithischer Jager- und Sammler(innen) vor 41.00027.000 Jahren (Mitteilungen der Prahistorischen Kommission) Christine Neugebauer-Maresch
In the course of mining for loess, around 1900 large numbers of Palaeolithic artefacts were found at the so-called Hundssteig in Krems. These were evaluated as being 35,000-year-old Aurignacian relics. A century later, a large-scale construction project threatened to destroy the intact Palaeolithic layers just south of the former loess mining area. For this reason, the Prehistoric Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences carried out excavations from 2000 to 2002 of a 250-square-metre area. The project was supported by the Austrian Science Fund with financial participation of the construction firm Gedesag (Gemeinnutzige Donau-Ennstaler Siedlungs AG). The original dating had to be revised, there being evidence of repeated settlement of the area between the watercourses of the Danube and the Krems rivers beginning 33,000 years ago, but possibly as long ago as 41,000 years. The main layers of findings provided evidence for an early Gravettian settlement that is 29,000 to 27,000......

Epilepsy and Intellectual Disabilities
This book brings together findings from research and clinical practice with a multi-disciplinary perspective regarding the important aspects of epilepsy in persons with intellectual disabilities. It is important for professionals involved in the care of persons with epilepsy and other intellectual disabilities to have a comprehensive understanding of the essential research and clinical issues. Academic books can often lose the personal approach, descending into lists of jargon, while clinical practitioner titles on the other hand may not always have the most up-to-date relevant knowledge to provide the appropriate care. This book is aimed to fill this gap with it’s strength of meshing the practical and clinical worlds, all written by a distinguished group of contributors....
